There is traditional SEO and there is local SEO — and they serve different purposes. Traditional SEO focuses on keywords; local SEO focuses on optimizing for a location. This maps directly to how people use search engines: sometimes we want general information and location doesn't matter, other times we're looking for a product or service right in our area. That's where local SEO comes in.

Search engines have gotten much better at local searches. The integration of maps, reviews, and directions lets people preview results quickly — and get to your door faster. Here's how to make sure they can find you.

Claim Your Google Business Profile

This is the single most important local SEO action you can take. Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google Places, formerly Google My Business) is what powers your listing in Google Maps and the local results pack at the top of search results. If you haven't claimed yours yet, go to business.google.com and do it now.

Once claimed, fill out every field completely: business name, address, phone, website, hours, categories, description, and photos. The more complete your profile, the better it performs in local results.

Get Listed on Other Local Directories

Google isn't the only place people search locally. Make sure your business is also listed on Yelp, Bing Places, and Apple Maps. These are local listings — double-check that your address is correct and your local phone number is listed consistently across all of them. Inconsistencies between listings confuse search engines and can drag down your local rankings.

Keep Your NAP Consistent Everywhere

NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. These three pieces of information need to be identical everywhere they appear online — your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Bing Places, Facebook, and any other directory. Even minor variations ("St." vs "Street," or different phone number formats) send inconsistency signals that hurt local rankings.

Use Geographic Keywords and Backlinks

Include your city and region in your page titles, headings, and content where it makes sense. "Web design services" is a competitive national keyword; "web design services Portland Oregon" is far more attainable for a local business. The same principle applies to inbound links: a geographic backlink — one that references your location along with your business type, like "furniture store in Fort Morgan" — carries more local SEO weight than a generic link.

Get Google Reviews

Google reviews on your Business Profile are a local ranking factor — and more importantly, they directly influence whether someone chooses to contact you. Ask satisfied clients to leave a review. A simple follow-up email after a successful project with a direct link to your review page makes it easy for clients to do.

Create Location-Relevant Content

Blog posts, case studies, or service pages that reference your local area naturally attract local search traffic. A post about "web design trends for Portland small businesses" will rank for local searches that a generic post never would. This kind of content compounds over time — every locally-focused piece you publish makes you more findable in your market.

Start here: Search for your business name + your city in Google right now. Note what appears, what's missing, and whether your information is consistent across results. That snapshot tells you exactly where to focus first.
