Top Five Websites for Free Images
Updated 2026: Several sites from the original post are no longer active or have changed significantly. This post has been refreshed with currently available free image resources.

One of the most common questions I get when training or teaching seminars is: "Where do I find images for my website?" There are many options — some free, some subscription-based, some pay-per-download. Here are my top picks for free and low-cost images.

Unsplash

One of the best free image resources available today. Thousands of high-resolution photos across every topic, all free for commercial use with no attribution required. The quality is consistently excellent.

Pexels

Another excellent free stock photo and video site. Like Unsplash, everything is free for commercial use with no attribution required. Great variety of styles and subjects.

Pixabay

A large collection of free photos, illustrations, vectors, and videos. All content is released under a simplified Pixabay license — free for commercial use, no attribution required in most cases.

Flickr (Creative Commons)

Flickr remains one of the largest photo-sharing communities on the web. Search specifically under Creative Commons licenses for free-to-use images. Just be sure to read each license — some require attribution, some restrict commercial use.

Canva Free Photos

If you're already using Canva for design work, don't overlook its built-in photo library. Millions of free images are available directly in the editor, which makes them easy to use immediately without downloading and re-uploading.

A quick reminder on image licensing: free doesn't always mean "use it however you want." Always check the specific license for any image you use, especially for commercial purposes. The three sites above (Unsplash, Pexels, Pixabay) are the safest bets for worry-free commercial use.
